St.
Andrew Catholic School ~ Fourth Grade
Thank you for making this school year a success!!
We loved working with your children and seeing them grow both
academically and spiritually. We look forward to seeing
you in the years ahead, so please do keep in touch as your child
continues their Catholic education. We wish you many
blessings!
Enjoy your family time this summer!
End
of the Year Ideas
and Suggestions
Religion
Find
some quiet time to relax, talk and listen to your child. Pray
together. Discuss the Sunday Gospel reading. Do family
activities together. Tell what you appreciate about each other
every day. Say, “I love you!”
Mathematics
Please have your child practice his/her basic math facts and
computations skills. It is imperative that the facts roll
off the “tip of the tongue”, especially Multiplication facts.
We
are very proud of their success on the Mad Minute. Drill to
keep your skills.
Mastering word problems is another very important skill in fifth
grade. Use practical situations to reinforce these skills.
Reading
READ! READ! READ! Try to visit your library or book store
often.
Ask
your local library for lists of suggested reading materials,
such as the Newbery Medal List.
Other series books to try:
Hank
the Cowdog
series by John Erickson: humorous mystery books
A
Series of Unfortunate Events
by Lemony Snicket: this series of books keeps the reader
guessing. The author builds vocabulary and literary terminology
into the story.
Shiloh
series. 4th graders love reading this trilogy about
a beagle and his young owner.
Historical fiction
stories covering events from Colonial America through the
American Civil War (including Native Americans) will help their
understanding of 5th grade Soc.Studies.
Biographies of this time period are also a good idea.
Journal Topics
Have
your child write in his/her journal at least once a week. You
might want to encourage your child to keep a diary. This is a
great idea if you are taking a vacation. They can record their
adventures!
Science
Encourage your child to ask questions about their surroundings
and research the answers. Read Ranger Rick or other
children's scientific magazines. Visit local science centers and
nature centers; many offer tours and other programs. Pick up
one of those free tourist magazines and /or read the
NewsPress’ Sunday insert "Tropicalia"...you may find
something new and interesting to explore in our area.
Social Studies
Try
to keep current with magazines and newspapers concerning local,
national, and international news. Check out National
Geographic videos. Visit historic sites in Florida. For
example: St. Augustine, Mound Key, and Kennedy Space Center.
Watch Liberty Kids (check PBS and/or video
rental stores). This animated show helps prepare for 5th
grade study of American history through dramatization of events,
vocabulary quizzes, and now & then comparisons. Encourage
historical fiction and/or biography choices for free reading to
also bring history alive.
Games
Play
board and card games; each one develops different thinking
skills and can be fun for the whole family. These build great
family memories and are great bonding experiences, too.
Web Sites
www.google.com
a good search engine to answer your questions or help you find
other good sites for practicing math or other skills.
www.homeworkspot.com is another web site to try for
keeping your skills sharp.
www.answers.com is a good web site to answer factual
questions. A nice feature is audio word pronunciation.
Final
Note
Any
preparation you can do with your child over the summer will help
them to be more successful in fifth grade. A positive attitude
and the practice of good study skills will make the transition
to fifth grade more successful. We wish your child the best of
luck in grade five. If we can be of any assistance, please
don’t hesitate to ask. Email a teacher above.
