Physical Education
St. Andrew prepares students to be productive contributors to both the Catholic Church and society in which Physical Education is an integral part of the total educational program.
Through the medium of sport and movement all students participate in a sequential, differentiated program that fosters each student’s personal health, fitness, and safety. Through exposure to a wide variety of activities, students gain the necessary knowledge to understand the importance of and make educated decisions around opportunities to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Social skills which include respect, cooperation, communication, teamwork, and sportsmanship are also an important aspect of the Physical Education curriculum.
The values, principles, and concepts associated with a quality physical education program surpass the boundaries of the playground and playing fields. Physical activity is a catalyst for learning in all content areas. St. Andrew is committed to providing a physical education program which allows for frequent and diverse opportunities to engage in physical activities necessary to support a healthy mind and body.
Students at St. Andrew are nurtured and encouraged to attain the following goals:
- Become life-long learners
- Use one’s mind and body as a temple of God
- Master basic skills related to a variety of physical activity
- Realize that participation in physical activities contributes to the development of self-confidence, social skills, and appreciation of God’s gift of life
- Demonstrate a commitment to safe and healthy family and community environments
- Demonstrate respect for differences among people in physical activity settings
- Develop healthy attitudes, appreciate the value of teamwork, and demonstrate sportsmanship and emotional control throughout life
Activities for the elementary students include the President’s Fitness Challenge, cooperative games, movement and locomotor development, manipulative skills development, and fundamentals and lead-up games of team sports. The middle school curriculum includes fundamentals of team sports, the President’s Fitness Challenge, and cooperative and social development activities.
The success of a Catholic Physical Education Program is measured by the overall formation and development of personal fitness, spirituality, morals, social interaction, and sportsmanship through physical activities to prepare students for the challenges of Christian life in today’s world.
