Mrs. Diana Villadolid

Diana Villadolid, our Art Teacher, is originally from the garden state of New Jersey. She attained a BFA from Caldwell College, a Catholic College founded by the Dominican order. Diana was previously an office manager to a professional photographer before moving to Florida in 1997. Her two children attended St. Andrew while Diana acquired her teaching certification for K – 12 Art. Mrs. Villadolid has served on the Liturgical Art Committee at St. Andrew, has been teaching at St. Andrew since 2002, and is a member of the Lee Art Educator Association.

The Fine Arts Curriculum

The Fine Arts curriculum at St. Andrew is designed as discipline based instruction which encompasses art production, art criticism, aesthetics, and art history. By incorporating concepts and skills appropriate to each grade level, students are presented with art experiences and explorations including but not limited to drawing, painting, etching, scribing, weaving, and three dimensional constructions. These experiences help students to not only immerse themselves into their projects but to appreciate the art world, history, various cultures, and the world around them. They are then able to be the well rounded people we aspire them to be.

Primary grades focus on basic knowledge including the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students develop practical skills such as hand eye coordination and fine motor skills through scissor cutting, gluing, torn paper collage, and drawing exercises. Many Primary projects incorporate exceptional children’s books as springboards to a theme. The themes for projects encompass various subjects tying in with many of the classroom learning experiences, as well as diverse cultures and time periods.

Middle school students benefit from smaller class sizes with more concentrated long-term projects. A personal Coat of Arms is among the many projects where students incorporate specific subject content with personal interpretation. Students in the upper grades have the experience of self-evaluation upon completion of a project.

Our Catholic heritage is always at the heart of our school and can be evidenced in our many art projects from Rosary bead-making to interpretations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Foil Scribed Crosses to Baby Lambs at Easter time. Some highlights for our students include entries and winners of a Holocaust Remembrance Publication and a visit to a community museum to witness the exhibit ofThe Illuminated Saint John’s Bible.

Students experience a sense of success and pride upon completion of a project well done. Craftsmanship is a skill that is highly emphasized and all students are encouraged to “give their best effort” in everything they do. Artwork is regularly displayed in school as well as the community.

The following information is a peak inside the Art curriculum. The curriculum is constantly changing and evolving according to student needs and current affairs/interests. All curriculum is created to adhere to State Standards for education.
