2nd Grade
This class is taught by our wonderful Mrs. Mattfeld.
Mrs. Mattfeld
Colleen Mattfeld is proud to be a “Jersey Girl” having been raised in the Garden State. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Ithaca College and the Elementary Education Credits necessary for a Florida State Teacher Certificate from Florida Gulf Coast University. She has worked as a First Grade Teacher at St. Andrew for 10 years, with 2 most recent years as a Second Grade Teacher and pervious years as a First Grade Teacher. She shares her experience and love of nature with the students of our school by being an Advisor for the Environmental Preservation Club. Achieving success in one’s life comes in many forms. After all, we are each blessed with unique and special gifts. As adults, we might be aware of these and perhaps have used them in guiding us toward our lives’ vocations. But where children are the subject, we are working with a untilled patch of rich garden soil. While God our father, is the Master Gardener, those of us who are responsible for cultivating these little sprouts, must have the insight to know how to best foster their potential, be organic in the way we fertilize optimal growth, train them to reach upward and spread outward, and inspire them to blossom through empowering them to take stock in their own learning.
The second grade at St. Andrew Catholic School is an extra special year for the students because of the two sacraments they will study about and receive, First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Many exciting and interesting activities are planned to help the students understand the importance of these sacraments and for the child to develop deeper meaning of their catholic faith. Some of the activities include daily prayers and intentions, daily religions classes using the Sadlier religion series We Believe. Tour of the church, visits from the parish priests,Retreats, weekly mass, reading, writing and reciting prayers. Play acting and skits, sharing many Bible stories and religious movies.
The development of the whole child academically, spiritually and behaviorally is so important in laying a strong Catholic foundation for success in a child’s school experience.
My goal for the students is to learn to love learning and therefore to become lifelong learners. Second graders are very inquisitive and developing their own ideas and opinions. They are becoming independent readers and thinkers. As their teacher I strive to instill the love of learning and guide them in realizing their own strengths and learning styles.I feel it is important for the students to understand that their peers as well as themselves develop and learn differently and to respect classmates as they continue on their educational journey.
To keep learning effective and interesting I incorporate many projects both independent and group projects. Learning through music and song, games, exposure to all types of books, special holiday activities, example Native American Pow-Wow, field trips, Accelerated reader, D.E.A.R.(Drop Everything and Read). Incorporating the use of the “Smartboard” in all subject areas.
Teaching a child is very rewarding and I cherish each thing that I learn from a child.
